DESCRIPTION:

An overview of contemporary façade access systems, equipment as installed and a look to the future.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the importance of incorporating a comprehensive façade access system into the design of tall buildings
  • Understand the various functions and operations required of façade access systems
  • Understand the impact that facade access system equipment has on the base building structure and architectural design
  • Be introduced to case studies of real-world installations on unique and challenging tall buildings

PRESENTER BIO: 

Peter A. Weismantle, Managing Director of Peter Weismantle, LLC, Consulting Director Supertall Building Technology for Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and formerly an Associate Partner at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago; has been responsible for the technical design and coordination of systems including vertical transportation, fire and life safety and the building façade on projects including Broadgate, Ludgate and Canary Wharf Developments in London, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai and the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Projects currently under construction include Al Wasl (Expo 2020) and Uptown Dubai Tower in Dubai, Wuhan Greenland Center and the Greenland Dongcun Center in China and the Jeddah Tower (formerly Kingdom Tower), in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia which, when completed, will be the first building in the world to be more than 1000 meters in height.

Kevin Thompson, Sales and Business Development Manager at Alimak Group USA, Inc., holds a B.S. in Mechatronics Engineering from CSU Chico. He entered the façade access industry in 2006 as a drafter/designer for Lerch Bates Façade Access Consulting Group and became a consultant in 2008 when he was relocated to Dubai, UAE for a 6 month period where he consulted on many challenging access projects. Kevin also spent time in the Lerch Bates New York and Chicago offices focusing on access solutions for global super and mega tall projects. Throughout his career he has consulted on many iconic new construction projects including Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Lotte world Tower in Seoul, Flame Towers in Baku, and Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles. Kevin has also assisted with BMU replacement projects including NBC Tower in Chicago and United Nations Plaza in New York. Kevin is Co-Author of the CTBUH technical guide on façade access equipment.
