Over the course of numerous projects, SGH and a variety of collaborators developed an integrated approach to modeling, analysis, design, detailing, and fabrication of geometrically complex structures. This approach can be applied to steel, concrete, and timber building structures, to building enclosures, and even to the means/methods and construction sequences of unique assemblies or entire projects.
We combined SGH’s expertise in concrete materials, construction, and analysis of complex assemblies with our network of structural fabricators and detailers, to collaboratively develop efficient ways to provide offsite, digitally-fabricated, innovative solutions to geometrically complex concrete formwork. This process reduces labor costs in both assembly and placement of concrete, allowing the industry to bring back the elegance of concrete.
This presentation will highlight the tools and technology available to integrate quality modeling for fabrication into the design process. The session will also demonstrate how these tools can support a project’s success by simplifying model sharing for advanced structural analyses and providing opportunities for material optimization. These developments are a sea change in not only the concrete industry, but the A/E/C industry as a whole. We will also provide insight into how the construction industry, from design to construction, can be more efficient and how architectural and engineering designers can drive the future of building design and fabrication.
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Understand how formwork system design and selection can impact many facets of a project, including cost, constructability, schedule, and architectural finish requirements.
- Identify how new technologies can be used to integrate design, analysis, and construction of geometrically complex concrete formwork.
- Highlight the differences between three-dimensional models used for design, analysis, and fabrication.
- Recognize the opportunity for improved design quality by advanced modeling and off-site fabrication.
