Description:
The Tribune Tower is one of Chicago’s most treasured historic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1925 and designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells. In 2018, the Chicago Tribune vacated the building and SCB was engaged to convert the 34-story Chicago landmark office tower and surrounding buildings into 162 luxury condominium units. Steve Hubbard and Mike
Naponelli will present the restoration of the tower’s historic stone edifice, which was thoroughly cleaned and repaired, as well as the implementation of four additional floors clad in glass curtain wall.


Learning Objectives (AIA credit will be available):

Through this program, participants will:

1. Overview the history of Tribune Tower and its various additions since 1925
2. Overview of the adaptive reuse program for conversion to private residences
3. Review of design and process for façade alterations on Landmark building
4. Review of process to assess and implement repair and restoration of limestone facade


Presenter Bio:

Steve Hubbard is an Associate Principal at SBC and is a member of the Residential Research and Development committee at the firm. Steve has extensive experience in high-rise residential, mixed-use, hospitality, office, and urban planning on national and international projects.

Other notable projects Steve has designed include the Marquee at Block 37, Loews Chicago Hotel and North Water Apartments, and Moment

Mike Naponelli is a Senior Associate and licensed Architect in the Architectural Engineering Division at Klein and Hoffman. His professional experience includes site investigations, architectural and structural design and detailing, and investigation/restoration of high-rise buildings. Throughout his career, his focus has primarily been the investigation and restoration of limestone facades and concrete facades.  He enjoys the challenge of both developing project scopes which adhere to the Client’s budget and adequately address the necessary repairs.
