LECTURE DESCRIPTION

When upgrading existing building energy performance, Owners and designers often struggle to understand the best choices with respect to invasiveness, performance, and payback. Through case studies, this presentation examines the effectiveness of a variety of building enclosure and HVAC upgrades. We will review the potential impact of upgrades to the existing building enclosure and their contribution to building energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and carbon emissions reduction.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • List simple intervention options to improve the energy performance of an existing building.
  • Identify the impact of air infiltration in whole-building energy simulation and on occupant comfort.
  • Understand the accuracy of whole-building energy modeling in predicting building energy consumption for enclosure upgrades.
  • Recognize how upgrades can change the hygrothermal performance of the enclosure.
