AIA CREDIT: Yes (1.0) ABSTRACT: Updated building codes and higher occupant expectations are driving changes in the way we design and construct building enclosures. This presentation will provide an overview of key concepts and high performance strategies for heat, air, and moisture control in various building types, and will also explore some of the challenges facing the next generation of buildings. The presentation will includes case studies of several ‘next generation’ buildings that are already here. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Review and understand some Energy Code requirements that impact building enclosure design strategies such as air tightness, and whole building energy efficiency. 2. Understand the design requirements for wall and roof assemblies and how the selection and placement of the insulation is critical to reliable long-term performance. 3. Learn about several emerging design strategies being used for the construction of highly insulated wall and roof assemblies and how to apply these technologies to projects. 4. Understand the impact that the selection of building enclosure assemblies will have on the space-conditioning and overall energy use of a building. SPEAKER BIO: Colin Shane, M.Eng, P.Eng, is an Associate and Senior Project Manager with RDH Building Sciences in San Francisco, CA. He has a passion for developing practical solutions to make better, more durable, and more efficient buildings. Colin’s experience includes design of all components of the building enclosure, including walls, glazing systems, balconies and roofs. He provides building enclosure consulting on both new construction and rehabilitation projects across Canada and the United States. His work also includes forensic investigations, hygrothermal analysis, and structural design for of primary and secondary structural components.
