Informed Flooring Design: Design Details, Specifications, and Materials for Successful Flooring Installations Presented by Emily O’Keefe & Connor Bruns The second lecture in our flooring series will review how today’s moisture-sensitive flooring systems require thoughtful coordination between the flooring specifier, structural engineer, general contractor, and flooring subcontractor. This presentation will highlight factors for the project team to consider during the design, bidding, preconstruction, and construction phases that contribute to a durable flooring installation on concrete floor slabs. This session will discuss floor moisture testing recommendations and test standards, strategies for mitigating high moisture levels, and selecting and designing for a range of floor finishes. After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Design and construct concrete floor slabs that will reduce the chance for high concrete moisture levels and floor finish failures.
  • Specify and interpret the results of current moisture test methods for concrete, and recognize the limitations of the different test methods.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate measures to mitigate high moisture levels.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of floor finishes and coverings.
