ABSTRACT: In recent years, we have seen a rise in the number of roof failures related to building moisture from sources other than water leakage. This presentation will explore why this is happening, what effect it has on the materials within the roof assembly, and what that means for the roof performance. We will also review methods of testing for moisture and the appropriate use of vapor retarders to minimize the risk of roofing failure. Lastly, we will review ongoing research into the performance of damp roofing materials and assemblies. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Review the sources of moisture, other than water leakage, within a contemporary roof assembly. 2. Identify the risks related to accumulated moisture within a roof assembly. 3. Describe how to design and install a roof assembly to minimize these risks. 4. Review ongoing research into roof components and roof assembly performance in the presence of moisture. PRESENTER BIO: Emily W. O’Keefe, Senior Staff II in Building Technology at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., has more than nine years experience investigating roofing and other building envelope failures. Ms. O’Keefe’s work includes repair and rehabilitation design and construction to address failures. Additionally, she has been involved with the design of new and replacement roof assemblies. Her work includes primary and higher education buildings, transit centers, stadiums and convention centers, government buildings, cultural, residential, and commercial buildings, including historic structures. She is excited to be working in SGH’s Chicago office after relocating in August 2014 from Boston. RSVP: For BEC Chicago members, an RSVP invite will be sent out approximately 7 to 10 days in advance.
